Replace thousands of feet of old galvanized pipe in just 6 weeks
Press technology saves time at an oil tank farm
An oil distribution company in Long Beach, California, had a challenge. They needed to replace all the old, galvanized connections on 16 oil tanks and completely replumb them. But they didn’t want to crush their timelines and triple their budget.
The solution? They turned to press technology.
Up to code
Earlier this year, ASME’s board approved Viega ProPress® and MegaPress® press fitting systems for use in B31 situations. Currently, Viega is the only press system manufacturer to pass ASME’s testing requirements. This historic decision solidifies the role of press technology in the world of process piping – giving architects and engineers nationwide the ability to save time and money by specifying Viega press systems.

Quick work
Oil-tank farms have unique challenges. One is that each tank only has one entry point – equipped with a valve – for both filling and distilling. This requires a lot of tubing and connections.
More than 3,000 feet of 2″ 304 stainless tubing was used on the project. That tubing was connected by hundreds of 2″ Viega ProPress®Stainless 304 FKM fittings.
A job like that – if you’re threading or roll-grooving – could take some serious time. With press technology, the company was able to cut its labor time in half.
Is press right for you?
Press manufacturers like Viega have been working with organizations like ASME for years to advance the adoption and usage of press technology. As more approvals continue to roll in, commercial and industrial facilities are getting on board with safer options that also work to eliminate unplanned downtime.
