How Viega’s inclusions in the ASTM F3226 code is changing the game for press systems in industrial facilities
Everything you need to know about ASME B31 & ASTM F3226
A new listing to the ASME B31 is making a huge impact in industrial facilities across the country and giving facility managers and engineers more options for fast, flameless pipe connections or repairs. In this article, we’ll give you the backstory on ASME B31 and what this approval means for you.
What is ASME B31?
B31 Code for pressure piping is developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). It’s the code for pressure piping, but it goes beyond that. B31 also includes power piping, fuel gas piping, process piping, Pipeline Transportation Systems for Liquid Hydrocarbons and other liquids, refrigeration piping and heat transfer components and building services piping.
The ASME is highly regarded as having the most rigorous requirements in the industry. B31 Code is needed in scenarios involving high-pressure, critical applications and in industries with stringent safety standards.
What’s new?
In 2024, ASME’s board adopted ASTM F3226 Metallic Press-Connect Fittings as a listed component. This includes Viega ProPress® and MegaPress® press systems. Currently, Viega is one of a very select few press system manufacturers to have listed components included in the ASTM F3226 code. This historic decision solidifies the role of press technology in the world of process piping – giving architects and engineers nationwide the ability to save time and money by specifying Viega press systems.
For years, Viega has taken an active role in pushing the press industry forward. This latest listing is the result of years of hard work, partnership with ASTM and rigorous testing.
What’s next?
The inclusion of ASTM F3226 Metallic Press-Connect Fittings in the listed components tables of the ASME B31 codes provides engineers with the necessary guidelines needed to safely design piping systems that conform to ASME codes – without the need for further engineering analysis.
This means that whether you’re expanding and adding capacity to your facility or making a timely repair, press technology is on the table.
Viega MegaPress® and ProPress® systems included as a listed component under ASTM F3226 provides a fast and reliable installation option which can lead to significant labor savings for commercial and industrial facilities nationwide - similar to that felt across residential sectors following the introduction of press technology to North America in 1999.
